The Journey By Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew

what you had to do, and began,

though the voices around you

kept shouting

their bad advice –

thought the whole house

began to tremble

and you felt the old tug

at your ankles,

“Mend my life!”

each voice cried,

But you didn’t stop,

You knew what you had to do,

though the wind pried

with its stiff fingers

at the very foundations,

though their melancholy

was terrible,

It was already late

enough, and a wild night,

and the road full of fallen

branches and stones.

But little by little,

as you left their voices behind,

the stars began to burn

through the sheets of clouds,

and there was a new voice

which you slowly

recognized as your own,

that kept you company

as you strode deeper and deper

into the world,

determined to do

the only thing you could do-

determined to save

the only life that you could save.

  1. Praise the Lord!

I’m much flabbergasted by the poetry rendition of Mary Oliver.
Mary chronicles her life journey. She seems to grapple with the issues between the world and God. Her outer voice is the world and the inner voice is simply God. The world has truly
tormented her mind shouting bad advices. She has nowhere to go except determined to find the light of hope at the end of her tunnel of life.

Life is very tough. When the going gets tough and the tough gets going, do not give up saith the inner voice, God.

Cast your cares on God for He cares for you. Cheer up, let not your hearts be troubled.

God will make a way where there seems to be no way!
